The climate is generally Mediterranean, with various aspects separating the climate into following categories:The chilly and rainy winter season, which lasts mainly from the start of January until the end of February, has an average low temperature of 5-12 degrees Celsius. Often times the bad weather during these winter months is interrupted during the first 10 days of February by a period of warmth and sunshine. The rainy season in Hania and specifically Crete, does not last for many days at a time and the sky does not remain cloudy for simultaneous days like other areas of the world. It is also worth noting that Hania has the most water in Crete (65 and that is why Hania is rich with vegetation and fruit bearing trees, such as olive trees, citrus trees, vineyards, etc.The transitional period of March is the next phase where the weather begins to change and starts becoming milder in comparison to the previous winter months. This however does not mean that the rains completely stop or that the weather completely changes. During Easter, in April, we have already entered into spring, yet spring does not last for very long as Crete has a premature summer. From this point the temperature begins to steadily rise and the dry season of Hania and more specifically Crete, begins, lasting up until the end of December. The next phase is from mid May to the start of June where summer officially begins and the temperature rises to higher levels. |
The most intense period of heat occurs between July and August to where the temperature remains a consistent 29-39 degrees Celsius.Furthemore, September also remains quite warm and could very well be considered a summer month, especially now with the Global change in climate. Autumn in Hania and Crete generally does not begin at a normal time but little rain here and there starts becoming evident yet the climate remains pleasant and mild up until the end of December, where we enter into Christmas weather, which is also characterized as mild.
